September 30, 2015Great Sonar, OK GPS,
As far as the chartplotter goes, I was a little disappointed. I got the model with the Jeppesen C-Map essentials and upgraded the maps to the 4D Max with the discounted maps on Jeppesen’s website. I fish coastal rivers in SC and the depth contours aren’t nearly as detailed as they were with my old Garmin even with the upgrade bathymetry. There are also fewer options and features for navigating. With a lot of depth changes and an avg 8 foot tidal change running into a sandbar is an easy thing to do so I was hoping for more detail on the chart. I think the more I use the C-Map the more I will get used to it but it does take some getting used to over my old Garmin.
Lastly the speed of the unit can be annoyingly slow. Maybe I’m just spoiled but waiting 20+ seconds for it to power up, then another minute or more to get a GPS lock is obnoxious. There is also a noticeable delay after clicking through menus to get to different options. For example I will try to zoom in/out and there will be a long delay so I click again and again, then when it finally catches up, the zoom is too far in or out. I’m guessing that the processor just isn’t powerful enough to quickly power all the features and graphics it has. I’m learning to be more patient when I click but like I said, it’s annoying.
Overall if you want a great depthfinder and wouldn’t mind having an ok chartplotter too, this is a good choice. If you need a chartplotter that you’re going to use a lot and really need for navigation, I’d probably look at something else.
