Angry Norway says Russia jamming GPS signals again

Norway’s foreign intelligence unit on Monday expressed renewed concerns that its GPS signals in the country’s Far North were being jammed, as Oslo again blamed Russia for the “unacceptable” acts. In its annual national risk assessment report, the intelligence service said that in repeated incidents since 2017, GPS signals have been blocked from Russian territory in Norwegian regions near the border with Russia. The jamming events have often coincided with military exercises on Norwegian soil, […]

Magnetic north pole leaves Canada, on fast new path

The position of the Earth’s magnetic North Pole — used in navigation systems such as smartphones — is moving far faster than it has, sending scientists scrambling to put out a new model this week. The magnetic North is the point at which the planet’s magnetic field points vertically down. The World Magnetic Model is critical to sea and military navigation — as well as our ubiquitous smartphones. It normally is updated every five years […]

Microsatellite constellation geolocates RF signals : GPS World

Space Flight Laboratory (SFL) has launched three formation-flying HawkEye 360 Pathfinder 15-kilogram, 20 x 27 x 44-centimeter microsatellites designed to detect and geolocate radio frequency (RF) signals. Hawkeye 360 Pathfinder satellite trio flies in formation, seeking RF signals from Earth.(Image: UTIAS Space Flight Laboratory) The target signals emanate from VHF radios, maritime radar systems, automatic identification system (AIS) beacons, very small aperture terminal (VSAT) communication systems and emergency beacons. HawkEye 360 applies advanced RF analytics […]

Self-driving cars and geospatial data: Who holds the keys?

As self-driving cars continue to develop, there will be plenty of data amassed through cars’ navigational technologies. Questions regarding privacy, ownership, cybersecurity and public safety arise, as heavily guarded mapping data is collected and leveraged by companies. The geospatial data can be used to draw new maps identifying the spaces where we live and travel. That information is currently housed in technological and corporate black boxes. Given the social relevance and impacts […]

Skydel updates SDX GNSS simulator with Galileo AltBOC, more : GPS

Skydel Solutions has updated its SDX GNSS simulator to version 19.1. The new version adds Galileo AltBOC signal generation, new atmospheric errors, SBAS improvements and SV antenna patterns. Galileo AltBOC. SDX now supports Galileo AltBOC as a new GNSS signal type. Current SDX users licensed with the Galileo E5 signal will be able to generate 8 Phase Shift Keying (8-PSK) constant envelope AltBOC after upgrading to SDX 19.1. The signal can be generated by selecting both […]
