October 30, 2014Expected quality and performance,
This radio lived up to ICom’s high standards with some new features that provide additional levels of safety and communications.
Very high value, I was pleased to have paid a little more for the upgraded version and when I discovered the additional features, I was very glad that I chose this model radio.
Excellent all the way around.

October 30, 2014Good radio!,
The M92D has everything I was looking for: It floats; Noise suppression makes it possible to hug the motor and receive and transmit static free, even on the lowest suppression level. The added GPS, which makes it possible to have the DSC, Man-over-board, Waypoint, compass and NAV functions, made it impossible to pass up.
So far, the M92D has lived up to expectations. It has been in the water twice. It floats and the beeper and lights work. It didn’t need the speaker to be cleared. Next time I am on the water, I will try out the Waypoint and Nav functions. When it hits the water again, I will test the AQUA function.
I whole-heartedly recommend this radio. I don’t think the price is too high. Be prepared for the DSC instructions to be lengthy and a little confusing, but study them and study them again. Don’t mess with DSC until you know precisely what you are doing.
A couple of minor beefs: The small lanyard is too small to fit around your neck and the belt clip is not strong enough to hold the radio, except on the waist with a belt. (I had a long lanyard attached to the MIV – I swapped it to the new radio.) The charger in the box takes 8 to 9 hours to charge a fully discharged battery. That seems a little long. I may need the rapid charger.

October 30, 2014As advertised, but big – and have your reading glasses handy,
1) This radio is BIG. It dwarfs my beloved Icom M72. It’s an inch taller, roughly a half-inch wider and roughly a half-inch thicker. If it were any bigger you really couldn’t call it a hand-held.
2) Even though it’s big the display is small, forcing some of the characters to be tiny. I’m middle-aged and there’s no way I can read the lat/lon off the screen without my reading glasses. I was hoping I could carry this on me in the event I go overboard – my thinking was that I could call in my lat/lon from the water without having to carry anything else (like a separate GPS). I don’t think it’s going to work for that unless I’m lucky enough to be wearing my reading glasses when I go in. Of course you still have that DSC Distress button so that mitigates this to some degree.
In summary, Icom quality and ruggedness and intuitive to use. But before buying consider how you’ll wear/keep this as the size is not handy. And if you’re old enough to use reading glasses consider how this will fit into your boating regimen.
