HVAC – TXV and GPS
Acronyms rock the dump! Seriously… I don’t enjoy replacing expansion valves but I’m liking my new toy. I knew I was in for a good time when I spied this closet install. It was rescheduled because of time constraints. I guessed a total of 3 hours from start to finish to get it done. This chore came in 30 minutes below the estimate. The experience was as satisfying as a tall cold glass of Liquid Plumber. Goofing off with my new Garmin GPS device (model 255W) was fun. It’s smaller than a VHS cassette tape (remember THOSE???) and it eliminates FOUR Thomas Guides from the cab of my truck.

May 19, 2010@tightdru I have GPS in my company phone. They know how fast I’m driving and which Port-A-Pot I’m dropping a deuce in. I have absolutely no problem with my boss knowing exactly where I am while I’m on the clock.

May 4, 2010@sickbastard80 It talks in many languages. Espanol, Portuguese, Francais, Deutch, etc. It will even speak in Mandarin and other Chinese dialects. I keep that American English chick on speaker because I enjoy how she mispronounces Spanish street names. I upgrade the GPS device online once a month and the “Improved Pronounciation” fixes just aren’t working.

September 20, 2009I grew up in Ocean County. Toms River is the county seat. My parents’ home was located two miles away from where the Hindenberg blew up in 1937.

September 19, 2009My GPS gives turn-by-turn directions. I like that it is a stand-alone instrument.
I don’t always have good cellular service in areas that I work. The GPS needs a ‘view’ of the sky. Cellular devices need to be within ‘view’ of a terrestrial tower.

September 19, 2009I WISH my GPS device could track down system leaks!
The factory provided a heat sync on the suction line, but sometimes the field weld takes more time to complete. That means more heat and longer braze time. I suspect the charge for the sensing bulb was fried/chemically altered by excessive heat. It’s also possible that the TXV charge was low to begin with. In any case… it’s fixed now.

September 19, 2009So the GPS can locate leaks in the system too. Damn, that’s handy. Thanks for the post.
By the way, was there anything about the install that killed the TXV, or was it just a defect in manufacturing?

September 18, 2009This was the ‘multiple issues’ video I promised you last week. The field weld leak at the liquid line in the FAU closet, (likely) roasted sensing bulb for the TXV and nightmare-ish cased evaporator coil access.

September 18, 2009City maps? Is that a website or a printed map book?

September 18, 2009I plan to use mine for a very long time. I bought the ‘unlimited updates package’ and two year warranty. I’ve shown my GPS up a few times by driving routes that I knew were shorter (time and distance)than what the device chose. I call going to a new destination ‘zero visibility, flying by instruments only’.
