How to Use Garmin Coach Training Plans for Runners

April 28, 2025
Looking for a marathon training plan? Want to run to build your fitness? You may want to try Garmin Coach.
You’re a runner looking for a little more structure, but you don’t know where to start. We get it. And we can help.
A Garmin Coach training plan can help you reach your goals, whether you want to hit a PR at an upcoming race or gradually improve your overall fitness. With a compatible Garmin smartwatch, you can access Garmin Coach plans, including Garmin Run Coach.
Compatible Garmin smartwatches interpret your performance and recovery data to understand the intensity and impact of your efforts. Combine this with the ability to input your goals and track your training history within the Garmin Connect™ app, and we’ll be shocked if you don’t hit a new PR. But if you aren’t quite sure how to get from point A to point B, consider working through one of two options: either a performance-adaptive plan with a running coach or a personalized plan based on your individual health, performance and recovery metrics.
Dynamic training plans from the pros
Need a professional to help you with that half marathon training plan? Or a 5K or 10K? No problem. Garmin Coach gives you access to experienced coaches within Garmin Connect. Simply select your race goal, whether you’re a beginner or hoping to hit a 7-minute race pace, and you’ll be able to sync workouts to your compatible Garmin watch. These workouts will adjust based on your performance as your fitness improves. You’ll also get videos from your coach with training tips throughout your training.
Garmin Coach offers three experienced coaches to serve as your on-demand personal guide: Olympian and best-selling author Jeff Galloway, physiologist and online running coach Greg McMillan, or physical therapist and running expert Amy Parkerson-Mitchell. Read this blog post to learn more about choosing the right Garmin Coach for you based on your performance, goals and preferred workout style.
Adaptive training plans with Garmin Run Coach
If you want something more catered to your individual health metrics, Garmin Run Coach will become your new best friend. Whether you’re looking to train for a marathon or 5K, achieve a personal milestone or improve your fitness, Garmin Run Coach can help. You’ll select an end date or goal as well as choose the days you want to train or rest. Garmin Run Coach will create a training plan built for you that provides personalized daily workouts that adapt to your performance, recovery and health metrics — all but ensuring that you ultimately crush it.
Keep in mind that to tailor your training plan to your body’s specific metrics, you’ll need to wear your watch as much as possible (including while you sleep) so it can factor in metrics, including your VO2 max1, lactate threshold, training history and more. Stats like these — as well as your sleep quality, stress levels and recovery status — will influence your daily workouts.
For example, if you didn’t get much sleep and didn’t recover well from the previous day’s workout, you might need a lighter training day. Inversely, if you’re well-rested and experiencing low stress, it may be time to kick it into high gear.
With a smartwatch that supports Garmin Run Coach, you’ll also have the option of adding supplemental strength workouts into your plan.
