September 24, 2015Bought for military use…so far, so good!,
The watch will give you a ten digit MGRS grid also, if needed. One thing that is nice is that the profiles that are set up by default actually work pretty well without tweaking. For instance, while in the “military” profile, your position is shown in MGRS. If you’re in the “geocaching” profile, your position is given in degrees and decimal minutes, the same as on opencaching (which is horrible, btw) and geocaching.com.
Anyway, it is very accurate and works very well so far. I got the soft band heart rate monitor also and it works great with it. It was easy to pair it without the instructions.
One thing that is not covered in either manual…if you want a constant readout from your HRM, you have to go into the watch and turn *all* the sensors into “on” in constant mode…there is a place where you can select either the altimeter or compass to be on constantly (or both), but the heart rate monitor is not listed. So…if you don’t turn *all* the sensors on constantly, it will just give you one single reading from your HRM. If you turn all the sensors on (since you cannot select the HRM to be constant on by itself), you will get a graphical readout and constant update as your heart rate changes. Hope that is useful for someone…none of the reviews I read about this watch mentioned that at all.
Anyway, I am happy with it so far. It is quite large, but not much more so than the Suunto X10 and about the same as the Suunto Xlander Military.

September 24, 2015Meh, not impressed guys…,
Pros: Acquires satellites quickly, never an issue there once I updated the firmware (+1 star). Fantastic battery life (+1 star). Nice design, looks professional though it is significantly bigger than a Suunto (almost a star). Great Garmin support when I called/emailed for issue resolution (to be expected for $400+).
Cons: Durability. I know, right? WTF. Serious physical issues after a one-week field problem with perfect weather and minimal ground pounding; I’m talking some light digging of fox holes, some buddy team bounding, but mostly OC’ing guys. The buttons stick due to dust between the housing and the buttons, the rubber strap smells somehow worse than a nylon/cloth strap, and I feel like I’m going to constantly bang this thing on all sorts of stuff because of how much it sticks out from my wrist. Seriously, people? You want to promote a watch that has application for HALO, SF, Range, blah blah blah and it can’t even handle a little dust? What do you think Afghanistan is made of other than MOON DUST?! Sorry kids, that’s a deal breaker.
Functionality is also a huge con for this watch. The menu system is completely customizable. Great if you’re OCD and into that aspect of your personal equipment, but I wanted something like the forerunner 610 or even the 910XT; something that I can’t royally screw up because I get careless with button pressing when trying to search through the 100+ options looking for “average pace” instead of “average speed.” If there were a way to somehow pull up the “menu-customizing-layout-system-of-badassitude” on your computer, where you can see all of the widgets and menu options laid out, and then place them where and how you wanted, this would greatly alleviate the issue. Talking with Garmin support, the guy agreed it’s a great idea and I hope he runs with it and gets a promotion to something better than tech support, but for now I’m left with a watch that frustrates me as it cycles off/on power due to the stupid stuck buttons. Again…dust…FML.
Nice try, guys, but it’s back to the drawing board. Returned for a full refund (I hope).
