August 20, 2013Great RV dedicated GPS!,
We bought this for use in our Tiffin Allegro and its fantastic to have an up to date GPS specifically for an RV. I realize that this is a new application for the Garmin trucking line but it works great just like the Zumo I have for my motorcycles Garmin has done a fantastic job of tailoring for the intended user. It is easy to set this up for the specifics of your RV and to also switch into the auto mode. The Bluetooth interface with my iPhone works great and the weather data is fantastic (especially the radar presentation). The only small recommendation I have is that you probably want one of the “bean bag” mounts as for most RV’s the suction cup mount on the windshield is probably too far away for easy use.

August 20, 2013Fantastic device over all ; would buy again!,
I own a Nuvi 2595, and have rather enjoyed that over all. Except that it doesn’t use iPhone SmartLink, only droid. Eh. Anyway, this device DOES support both droid and iPhone SmartLink, which works really well. It drains the heck out of your phone, unless you have it on a charger, though, as it incessantly polls the GPS on your phone, which seems odd since this unit is a GPS, and you’d think a simple NMEA call-back over BlueTooth from the unit to “where am I?” would suffice, but I digress.
The unit has a /very/ nice 7″ display, as listed, and is better on the old man eyes over the 5″ screen of my other device, when driving, and glancing at info needed when driving. The other major selling point of this device is the RV features. I have a large-ish Dodge 2500 Power Wagon, which serves both as my toy, and my hauler 😉 I pull a 33′ camper, and while it does not find the “best” routes all the time, it does find the major ones when in RV mode.
Which brings me to one major con.
I have this: http://www.amazon.com/Garmin-ecoRoute-Vehicle-Diagnostics-Communicator/dp/B00313JWSO ; which is the “Garmin ecoRoute HD Vehicle Diagnostics Communicator”. This is more than just diag data, it is also fuel eco, etc. This device is fantastic for managing data about the vehicle with regard to efficiency at a glance so I know if I am in an area where 60MPH saves me enough to warrant not bothering going 65. I don’t go over that, but, those 5MPH makes a little up in time on longer rides, or, on the lower end, provides better fuel savings. It’s a lot easier to determine from using this setup than the little display on the dash, so I’ve rather been spoiled using that on the 2595 over the last year.
Now, for that negative point. Apparently you cannot use this device while the GPS is in “RV mode”. You have to switch to “Automobile mode” in order to use the OBD data system. Hm. Well, after some searching, I found that little gem of info, and also discovered one person (I believe using a Dezl model, a sister device to this) talked to Garmin, and their reply was to the effect of “this is an intentional design, not a bug”. Paraphrased, but that indeed was the point of the message they replied.
So, this device loses a star because, while everything about it is really well done, it’s that last point where I cannot use the two major features I wanted out of this at the same time. Granted, for the record, you /can/ still get fuel data from the OBD device while in RV mode (you’ll see fuel used on the shutdown screen, for example), but the APP icon in the “Apps” section of the 760 disappear while in “RV Mode”, which tells me “this is a bug”. And, I can’t put “Fuel Eco” on the main screen while in “RV Mode”. But, they aren’t going to change it, apparently.
If you do not have the EcoRoute device, you will never notice the lack of the EcoRoute feature in “apps”, but, if you do, beware, you will have to choose between “RV mode” and “On Board Data” while enroute.
