December 29, 2015So far an excellent unit for the price,
I’m pleasantly surprised how many of the lakes I fish are available on this unit. I figured several lakes wouldn’t be, but most of the lakes in eastern Pennsylvania are man made lakes, so I wasn’t too hopefully the detail would be included…which it isn’t. But, I doubt they would be included in the lakes ultra HD upgrade either.
I will update once I have more time out on the water with this Garmin.
6/15/15 – Update
I have used my unit for hours of fishing/boating in the last few weeks since I purchased it. I still love the unit. Granted the chart plotter part doesn’t have super detail on the lakes and rivers I have used it on…but, I can’t complain for the price of the unit. I love the screen resolution. I think I main reason why I didn’t use my Garmin Echo 500C too much for the “fish finder” part was that I didn’t constantly adjust the gain and other settings as I moved from water to water . Now that I do adjusted several different settings, these units really do show the fish under your boat. I have basically switched over from using the 200 kHz to the 77 kHz.
I have a 14 foot jon boat that I use for bass fishing as much as I do cat fishing. I will say that I use the standard transducer for “seeing” the fish and the DownVu (downscan) for seeing structure. I haven’t found anything with the unit yet that makes me disappointed.

December 29, 2015A nice upgrade for me,
Things I like –
The display is bright and has great definition. It showed good arches where I used to maybe see a blob.
GPS seems accurate and fast – the first time I powered it up in my shop it found itself and had locked onto 5 satellites, something my other gps’s won’t do.
The screen options seem adequate – I am usually in dual freq. side by side.
One button waypoint to quickly mark a spot on the map. This works from a sounder screen, too.
Pushing the left arrow key freezes the screen – hold it to scroll back (don’t know how far it will go), then bush the Back button to resume.
The + & – buttons work on any active screen – zoom in map mode and manual depth in sounder screens.
In side by side screens, pushing Select alternates which one is “active”.
Operating the unit is fairly intuitive and didn’t take long to feel comfortable.
Home Port, a free download from Garmin, has the Worldwide map on it, but if you copy the US Lakes in the unit onto a memory card, and have it inserted in your computer, it can use this map. Worldwide seems rather useless as it doesn’t even define shorelines.
The US Lake seems to have good shoreline definition even on those lakes not included in the HD.
I really liked the $100 rebate from Garmin!
Things that could be better –
An owners manual specific to this unit. Nearly every section begins with “Options may not be available on all units”. Reading it wouldn’t help much in trying to decide if you want to buy the unit.
The mount sucks! Unless you have a level dash to mount it on, you will be limited to tilting it up and down. Mounting it on any other angled surface results in tipping the unit sideways when rotated left or right. And, I could not find a Ram Mount adapter for it. I did, however, discover that a round 2 1/2″ base for the 1″ Ram Mount can be substituted for the thin base piece by tapping the center casting hole (in the Ram Mount) for a 1/4″X20 screw, and attaching it to the upper section of the stock mount. Now I have viewing options!
I can not find any information on how much internal storage this device has. Copying the preloaded map onto a 32GB MicroSDHC card used 2.4 GB. I don’t know how much is available for user data without the memory card.
The transducer is 6″ long and mounts lower than my previous units. The top of it is about even with the bottom of the boat, and it mounts horizontal – not tipped down. It maintained a good lock on the bottom while on a plane and had only minimal interference in auto gain.
When I get to Lake Pend Oreille I’ll be able to test the performance at 1100′ depth. If it’s lacking I’ll edit this review.
