Guinness World Records has verified that a mariner’s astrolabe recovered from the wreckage of a sunken Portuguese armada ship is indeed the earliest of its kind. Researchers with the Warwick Manufacturing Group, WMG, part of the University of Warwick, used laser imaging technology to confirm the stone disk as a mariner’s astrolabe, or sea astrolabe, a device used to measure a ship’s latitude. The ship from which the astrolabe was recovered was part of explorer […]
Emlid, the creators of Reach, centimeter-accurate RTK GNSS receiver, is now taking pre-orders for its multi-band GNSS receiver Reach RS2. The new receiver features built-in LoRa radio, 3.5G modem and a survey app for iOS and Android. Photo: Emlid L1/L2/L5 RTK GNSS receiver with centimeter precision. Reach RS2 determines a fixed solution in seconds and provides positional accuracy down to several millimeters. The receiver tracks GPS/QZSS (L1, L2), GLONASS (L1, L2), BeiDou (B1, B2), Galileo (E1, […]
When 16-year-old Angel More dives into the chilly Pacific for a solo marathon swim, she’s not thinking about the daunting number of miles ahead. She’s not thinking about the harsh currents, hypothermia, great white sharks or even how many strokes her Garmin fēnix multisport wearable is counting. One thing occupies her mind. One motivation: helping children. Some would say Angel’s just a kid herself; however, she has accomplished more than most people twice her age. […]
NASA’s first aerospace accelerator program, co-sponsored by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, will select 10 startup companies to take part in a three-month pilot program to develop new technologies for space. Applications will be accepted through April 7. Organized by Techstars with support from Starburst Aerospace, the pilot program will enable the selected companies to collaborate with engineers and subject matter experts from JPL and from co-sponsors Lockheed Martin, the […]
TAU-0707 series GNSS module. (Photo: Allystar) Allystar Technology Co. Ltd. has launched its smallest multi-band multi-GNSS module, the TAU-0707 series. Within its 7.6 x 7.6 millimeter size, the TAU-0707 series module supports major GNSS constellations (GPS / Galileo / GLONASS / BeiDou / QZSS / IRNSS) and all civil bands (L1, L2, L5, L6). As the latest addition to Allystar’s GNSS portfolio, the TAU-0707 series module is a concurrent multi-band multi-GNSS receiver embedded with a […]
We are excited to introduce the GTX 335D and GTX 345D, two diversity transponders that provide optimal Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) Out coverage and visibility while operating throughout the global airspace system. The GTX 335D offers ADS-B Out, while the GTX 345D provides ADS-B Out, as well as ADS-B In traffic and weather for display on compatible avionics and mobile devices. Remote-mount versions are also available. The GTX 335D/GTX 345D are intended for qualifying aircraft […]
The newest GPS III satellite arrived at Cape Canaveral, Fla., for its launch this summer, Lockheed Martin, its maker, announced on Wednesday. The satellite, nicknamed “Magellan,” arrived in Cape Canaveral on March 18 aboard a U.S. Air Force C-17 plane from Buckley Air Force Base in Colorado. The satellite was built at Lockheed’s GPS III facility near Denver. Magellan will be the second GPS III satellite to be placed in orbit. The launch, expected in […]

As the first signs of spring begin to emerge from winter in the U.S., we’re reminded that the annual aviation fly-in, airshow and exhibition season follows not too far behind. The longer daylight hours and warmer temperatures mean more flying, and more importantly, more aviation events. We’re kicking off the 2019 season at SUN ’n FUN in Lakeland, Florida, and AERO Friedrichshafen in Germany. SUN ’n FUN International Fly-In and Expo — April 2-7, 2019 […]
The U.S. Air Force’s Space and Missile Systems Center’s Global Positioning Systems Directorate achieved another major program milestone March 19, successfully delivering the second GPS III Space Vehicle to Astrotech Space Operations in Titusville, Florida to begin satellite launch processing. “The shipment of this second GPS III satellite is once again an excellent representation of the collaborative effort and increasing efficiencies of SMC’s push towards rapid acquisitions and operations of space technologies,” […]
