In the early stages of reimagining Garmin’s next generation of innovative integrated flight decks, aviation engineering teams knew they were on the cusp of something special.

That something was the G3000® PRIME, our most sophisticated, intuitive and user-friendly flight deck to date.

According to Jason Hewes, one of the project’s leaders, the Garmin Human Factors team converted a corporate conference room into a war room of sorts for 5 weeks. The team of 12-15 engineers brought in previously released avionics and flight decks — including the Garmin G1000® NXi, G5000®, GTN™ Xi and more — and lined them up while they envisioned the future G3000 PRIME.

“It was a very collaborative environment. We brainstormed and wrote down the principles and philosophies of every single application needed for the new flight deck,” Hewes said. “We discussed how we had done things in the past to help us decide how we should move forward. Then we worked together to create a philosophy statement for the new flight deck, and we’d erase anything that conflicted with that.”

With this new philosophy in mind, teams from across Garmin began the next challenge — making it reality.

“The hardware teams had to deliver the largest touchscreen displays we had ever had in an aviation product and incorporate new technologies like multi-touch. The software teams were building in extensive flexibility in terms of layouts, color philosophies and more to meet the needs of future aircraft types. Then came the pilot evaluations where we further refined the ideas we set out to execute at the start of the project.”

The result? The general aviation industry’s most advanced flight deck with expansive touchscreen displays and a modern and intuitive user interface.
