Speakers

Speaker technology is a lot more complicated than just pressing play on your favorite song or podcast episode.

When it comes to choosing the right car speakers, there are a few things to consider — including vehicle type and potential speaker locations. Better audio systems employ specialized speakers for bass (woofers), midrange (mids) and treble (tweeters). A JL Audio dealer can help determine the best setup and advise you on whether you need component or coaxial speakers and which sizes can be installed.

JL Audio tweeters are small with domes made from silk or lightweight aluminum that help them to smoothly reproduce high frequencies with wide coverage. Midrange speakers cover the middle of the audible spectrum and are medium in size, allowing them to be placed higher in the vehicle for improved clarity.

Woofers need to be big and robust to generate lots of bass energy, which requires more motion and more power handling. In some cases, when a midrange is not used, a component woofer can also extend into the midrange frequencies, handing off to a tweeter.

With two-way and three-way component systems, you can place each individual part where it makes most sense in your vehicle. Unlike component speakers, a two-way coaxial system combines the tweeter and woofer into a single unit. For an included midrange, check out the three-way coaxial system.

Subwoofer

For music to sound real and exciting, it needs a solid low-frequency foundation. The job of a subwoofer is to provide enough bass output to overcome road noise and relieving the smaller speakers in the car from the burden of making bass. This makes the whole system sound cleaner, more powerful and much more fun to listen to. Because of their purpose-built design, JL Audio subwoofers can handle large amounts of power without distorting the sound quality.

JL Audio subwoofers can be installed into custom-built enclosures, from a tiny 6.5” model to the flagship 13.5” W7AE subwoofer. There is a series and a model for just about any power level and enclosure size.

With our enclosed subwoofer systems, such as the StowAway™ or ProWedge™ models, our engineers have done all the work of placing the driver into a well-optimized enclosure. These are available in many sizes and shapes, including some with built-in amplifiers.
