November 11, 2016and this is my new favorite. Up till now I’d been using units that …,
I installed this on a 22′ C-Dory. I first mounted a 1″ thick Starboard block and then this transducer to that, and I mounted it higher than normal, it’s almost even with the keel. As a depthfinder, I think that helped a lot… by getting it 1″ back and up you find a little pocket of minimal turbulence. As a result, it doesn’t lose depth at ANY speed, which is a first for me. Granted, the waters near me have silty bottoms and steep dropoffs, so they’re especially tough, and I never had a unit that wouldn’t lose the bottom quite often. It can be pretty unnerving, especially at night, even though I know the waters well and have 2 GPS chartplotters. So it’s pretty awesome to have that be a thing of the past.
The fishfinder functions are pretty detailed, although I can see how the Hook 5 would be a bit better with the larger screen. Nonetheless, I’m seeing detail I never saw before, now I just need to learn the unit a bit better to fully understand what I’m seeing.
I was actually surprised at how good the included charplotter Navionics package was. Years ago I had to pay Navionics $200 for charts for this lake that had depth contour lines but showed hardly any shoals or buoys. This one still doesn’t show the buoys but it does have lots of depth charting, and every island is on there (there are over 300).
The only negatives I can think of are the transducer mounting bracket could be a little beefier, it only uses 2 screws where I’d rather have the standard 4. The rubber washers deform quite a bit when you tighten it up, even though I’m careful to tighten it just enough to hold tight at speed, but loose enough to release if I hit something. Come to think of it, I had a Raymarine unit from the late 90’s that had a great bracket that held firmly but had a tension release if you hit something, then you just snapped it back in place. This relies solely on the bolt’s tension and those rubber washers. So I may look for a way to improve that. And I’m still learning it but when in multi view (chart/sonar/downscan) there doesn’t seem to be an easy way to change which one you want to adjust… i.e. you have to change the page to full screen sonar to adjust the sonar.
Regardless, I’m very happy with it, no regrets at all.
